Some companies have to pay huge license fees to be able to mobilize games for brands like Iron Man, Tom Clancy, Spiderman, Guitar Hero, Rayman, and more, but some simply just don’t and use an easiy option - use public domain (check wiki definition). There are brands in the world, that are public domain and just don’t require the brand ownership, and the $100,000 - $1 mil. in the bank for just that.

We can see several examples:

  • Titanic (Astraware)
  • Da Vinci Flight (BreakPoint Games)
  • Sudoku (hundreds of them) - thanks to the great newspaper support
  • Solitaire (tens of them) - thanks to the great success on Windows
  • Paintball Mobile
  • Rome

My opinion is that this is just the beginning. I can probably see that more games using public domain brands coming in the next months and years to come, as there is a lot to take from, and a lot of history to take brands out of.

I also created a spin-off article from this one, because I believe there is another way how to create brands = creating unbranded mobile games, that are closely associated to another commercial brand. I will post the article later in the week including more examples and comments.
