I have been using Google services on mobile phones for quite some time - and I have been quite happy with most of them. I would like to write a bit about Gmail today, which I hope mailing should be an important thing for Google.

Gmail 1.0

The old Gmail had many many problems:

  • Constant freezing
  • Nullpointer exceptions
  • Often HTTP request issues
  • Application was not fullscreen
  • The application started for over 40 seconds sometime (despite using one of the fastest JAVA phones on the market)
It is even hard to see if Google tests the applications on real phones before deploying. Google for mobile using a browser is even much worse. I have seen small companiesdo better mobile web client for browsers.

Gmail 2.0
The new version is much better in some aspects, even though on the first look, it looks exactly the same.  Updates in the new version:
  • Better scrolling
  • Supports multiple accounts
  • More of the typical features
  • Bigger stability
What I would be looking for in the new version:
  • Add a normal WISYWIG editor for writing e-mails
  • Fullscreen, oh please fullscreen
Still, Google has a long way to go with it’s mobile services, and it would be great to see them published in high operator graded quality. Here is a little video from the client:
