Opinions in Mobile: 1st Question - Device manufacturers vs. Operators
Opinions in Mobile November 10th, 2008Opinions in Mobile, the online platform in the mobile industry that HungryMobile brings you, has launched the first question during the last week. The question was specifically: “Who do you think will have the main role in the mobile portals world in the next 2 years? Do you think the operators or the OEM’s, or completely different companies and why?”. There were some interesting responses this first week. Read on…
Some of the best quotes of our Opinion Leaders:
Quote from Russell Buckley’s response: “ But their (operators) role should be making mobile content easier to find, with the services being developed by specialists. I also don’t think that OEM’s have much of a future, for the same kinds of reasons. In fact, I’d be surprised if operators didn’t insist that it should be the operators being the jumping off point (or home page) for the mobile web.”
Quote from Volker Hirsch’s response: “The power of operators is fairly large as they control the road between the content and the consumer (the network). If they keep users from taking turns whenever they want, put up toll booths, etc, then users will be discouraged.”
Quote from Ulf Morys’s response: “I believe the the role, importance & traffic of original IP-holders will greatly increas. I suppose that in 2 years time we’ll have a splitt anywhere between 40/60 to 60/40 between operators and original IP owners.”
Quote from Arjan Olsder’s response: “With the launch of the App Store, Apple has shown operators and device manufacturers that there is a huge demand for quality and creativity in both mobile games and applications. Even though the iPhone 3G is popular at this moment, Apple is already slowing down production, which means the company will have to start developing a new device in order to keep their share in the market.”
