Facebook and Nokia alliance in the air?
General February 12th, 2009
Mobhappy informs, that Facebook and Nokia are in talks about cooperation and embedding the Nokia devices even more with Facebook features - maybe even phonebook! But will Nokia finally do this with Facebook, or decide to build a new, independent social network?
It is very complicated to answer to such question - to build a new mobile social network is a lot of work. On the other hand, who else other Nokia would have the power to do this?
But wouldn’t it better to just team up with the largest player in the world? From my user perspective, it would be best - on the other hand the question also is, if Facebook will share for example e-mail contacts with Nokia, and will want to send messages via Facebook, or allow Nokia to send them through e-mail.
Normally e-mails are not accessible via Facebook for app. developers - and if Nokia does, then I believe it will be OK to move with the relationship.
Otherwise on Symbian, any 3rd party developer could come in and connect phone book and Facebook contacts - that’s fairly easy.
And let’s not forget the Facebook side of things - if you have all your phone contacts on Facebook, that gives a lot of strength to these guys for moving forward and acquiring new people, as they will now about a lot of things going on. So this deal would be VERY attractive to Facebook.
It’s a complicated matter, and will be interesting to see how it gets resolved.
By the way, just a funny thought I had this morning - imagine Nokia bought Facebook
That would be an interesting “MEDIA GROUP”.

Nokia knows mobile phones business, not web / social communities business. It’s similar to Microsoft – it can produce software, but it’s web services are not very successful. Creating a new social service is IMHO not a way to go.
