What if… Facebook merged with Nokia
WHAT IF series February 19th, 2009
While everyone else in mobile is hopefully having a great last 2 days in Barcelona, I’ve been swamped in a lot of work, but also thinking - and I decided to start a series of articles, called “WHAT IF”… As a person very much enjoying things like strategies, synergies, and other things, this is something I will very much enjoy, and when these things actually happen, I can point back to these articles.
So what if - Facebook merged with Nokia?
- From your mobile phone, you could immediately search your friends from Facebook - directly from your mobile home screen
- Your address book would merge with Facebook friends, thus also splitting to: People I know, and Friends I am connected with
- You could see the newsfeeds of people directly from the address book, contact them, send them a message, without even knowing their contact details
- Facebook could actually start making some money and be a special pre-paid service with the operators for a special price
- Facebook would be the biggest revenue driving service in the mobile industry - and Facebook mobile would start making more money than the internet Facebook version
- You could message people you don’t have in friends, just find them and send them a message
- Facebook policies would change - privacy would become even a bigger topic
- Facebook API for mobile applications would actually make sense, and people would develop for it!
- “Nokibook” could create a completelly new business model for third party developers for launching applications - could be directly linked to operators
- Multiplayer mobile games would really kick-off
- Facebook would stop being perceived as “Facebook” - it would just be a general phone feature everyone would use
- One for the operators
- SMS would probably die in a few years… - On Facebook, you would have your mobile contacts - and could contact them as you could with your mobile phone
- Changing your phone would never be easier - you throw out your old phone, and the new phone appears with PICTURES (facebook galeries), CONTACTS (friends and people you know), MESSAGES (Facebook messages), EMAIL (Nokia e-mail)
- The new OVI Application Store would merge with Facebook Applications
- 3 years after the transaction, Facebook would see 350 million people using the Facebook on mobile devices
- Pictures and videos you take would get directly uploaded to Facebook - making Facebook and Nokia a big competitor to services like YouTube
And of course, last but not least, Nokia’s slogan Connecting people would start making even more sense.
And what is your view? What if Facebook merged with Nokia?

Nooo, SMS never die ;), but I think that facebook and similar social networks will want to reach out more to people through mobile devices. Many projects are now available completely anywhere and anytimeand their number will continue to expand.

Jiri: In this case, SMS could be bypassed between Nokias, thus strengthening Nokias position. Of course, Facebook IS available for other platforms, so that’s not a problem at all to be completelly embedded with Android, Windows Mobile, and other.

Hi Jan,
As always your articles are very interesting. I have the Nokia N73 and the Facebook mobile application accessible. I feel elated to be connected with everyone by just switching the GPRS on. Sure your idea seems going to happen very soon
Cheers,
Anmol
