Mobile phones have had lousy batteries for quite some time and you could say that it is actually getting worse and worse. If you look at the phone timeline, the first phones started off with a few hours of talk time, and say a day of non-active mode, then came stronger monochrome devices, with up to a week of charge time, or even two weeks in extreme cases, even though you used the phone and called a lot.

Then, it got a lot worse with the new color devices, the first phones lasted only a day or two, but then came operating systems. The first phones were extremely hard to handle, the first Nokia 7650 or others could basically not operate on GPRS and Bluetooth and have energy for some time, they would basically die in a couple hours, but it got better in a  few phone releases. But then along came 3G, and again, it started consuming much more battery then other phones before, and if you were unlucky and wanted to use a Bluetooth headset, well you got pretty much a day of talk time. Now we are moving to about 1 year ago, when phones like the Nokia N96 and Nokia E90 were released. These phones have pretty damn strong batteries even on 3G, then of talk time, and also being connected to Bluetooth - matching those, you can almost hit a full day of recharge, which after a couple years, I consider good.

But then came the new touch smart phones like the iPhone and Android, who have a battery than can last around 3 - 5 hours maximum if being connected to 3G, calling, etc. - this is something which is very hard to handle, because you have to constantly be looking for a recharger. Luckily for me, I don’t use the iPhone, unluckily for me, my fiancé does - so trying to reach her sometimes is really a pain.

So when will this battery chaos end?

Dailymail informs us that scientists are about to develop a battery, that can be rechardged for 10 seconds, and you’re done. Well that would be cool on one hand, on the other hand it still requires access to electricity and the finding of the electricity. It’s a lot better, but still not there.

Another option would be nano technologies, basically the phone could recharge itself using micro solar panels that wouldn’t even need direct light to be shining on them. One company is very close to a prototype of that.

As a user, I just hope this gets better, because it’s simply not there. Nokia for the Nokia N97 is promising, to keep the procesor that the older phones have (critisized by some because of power), and I tell you, it’s the best decision they have done for a long time. Combining a battery with high capacity, this means that we could use our phones longer hopefully…

So let’s see where this gets us. I hope that soon, this issue will be solved, and you will be able to use your mobile phone at least for a FULL day, using up all technologies at once - Bluetooth, 3G, Data, Calling, etc. - that would be fantastic.
